FlavorBlvd Review

First Impressions & Context

The Batch C925 release is the third (C) and final 2025 release from the Barrel Proof line — bottled in September 2025. It carries an age statement of 9 years, 1 month, and is bottled uncut and unfiltered at 129 proof (64.5% ABV).

Historically, the Barrel Proof line had longer age statements (e.g. 12 years), but in recent years the brand has moved toward variable-age-batches — letting maturation and flavor, rather than a fixed age minimum, dictate release readiness.

At roughly $75 MSRP, C925 presents itself as a bold, barrel-strength bourbon built for those who like power, character, and classic bourbon heat — straight from the barrel.

Aroma (Nose)

When you first bring the glass to your nose, C925 hits with a familiar, inviting profile: brown sugar, caramel, toasted oak, vanilla bean, with hints of toffee, light fruit (sometimes dried cherry or dark fruit), and baking spice.

There’s also subtle warmth from the high proof — a gentle ethanol edge underlying the sweetness and oak, reminding you this is a full-barrel bourbon.

Taste (Palate)

Taking that first sip, C925 delivers a rich, full-bodied experience. Expect caramelized sugar, toffee, brown sugar, and dark toffee or molasses sweetness — counterbalanced by oak, baking spices (think cinnamon and maybe nutmeg or clove), toasted nuts, and sometimes a faint dark-fruit or dried-fruit note.

That high proof doesn’t dominate in a sharp, unpleasant way; instead it gives heat and structure, while the bourbon’s texture remains viscous and slightly oily, coating the palate and layering the flavors.

For some drinkers, the spice — pepper, oak, and barrel-driven dryness — is more pronounced than past, older batches, which may smooth out more with age.

Finish & Overall Feel

The finish is long, warming, and satisfying. You’ll likely get lingering oak spice, caramel or brown-sugar sweetness, hints of dried fruit or dark cherry, maybe a touch of pepper or cinnamon heat, and faint roasted-nut or char notes.

It’s the kind of “Kentucky hug” finish that sticks around — perfect for sitting with the last sip and savoring the warmth.

Strengths & For Whom It Works — & Where It Might Fall Short

What C925 does well:

  • For its price point, it offers big, bold flavor and barrel-proof intensity — caramel, spice, oak, and sweetness all in one glass.
  • The unfiltered, uncut nature preserves complexity, texture, and full spirit character — great for bourbon purists who love raw whiskey, not overly “polished” stuff.
  • It’s a very good “bang for the buck”: at ~$75, you get a barrel-strength bourbon that delivers more punch and depth than many mass-market mid-range bottles.

Where it may not be for everyone:

  • The relatively young age (9 years, 1 month) does show — sometimes in a slightly aggressive alcohol heat or a hint of dry oak/spice that overshadows subtlety.
  • For drinkers accustomed to older, more mellow barrel-proof releases (or who prefer ultra-smooth bourbons), C925 might feel more youthful, more rough around the edges.
  • The flavor profile leans sweet + spicy + oaky. If you prefer bourbons that push fruitiness or subtle floral/vanilla-heavy profiles, this one might feel more traditional and straightforward than nuanced.

My Verdict — What C925 Means in 2025

Heaven Hill Distillery may have dialed back the age on C925 compared to older releases in the barrel-proof line. But what they’ve delivered is still a straightforward, powerful, cask-strength bourbon — unapologetic in proof, but surprisingly balanced in flavor and surprisingly accessible neat.

For bourbon fans who appreciate a classic Kentucky bourbon — oak, caramel, brown sugar, spice, warmth — but want that extra “bite” and intensity, Elijah Craig Barrel Proof Batch C925 is a strong value and a worthy pour. It’s ideal for late-night sipping, winter evenings, or pairing with rich desserts or a cigar.

It may not be the “silkiest” or “most refined” barrel-proof bourbon out there — but it doesn’t try to be. Instead, C925 wears its strength openly, and for many drinkers, that bold honesty is part of its charm.
